Bath Bomb Ingredients

Let’s talk about Bath bomb ingredients because of course you would like to know what’s inside my handmade Bath bombs. So for each ingredient I am going to say the scientific name which is on the label of the bath bomb and what you might know that ingredient as.

To start with we have Sodium Bicarbonate (bicarbonate of soda) and Citric Acid, these two ingredients are basic in a bath bomb recipe and are what causes the fizzy reaction we all love in a bath bomb. The next ingredients are Zea mays starch (cornflour or cornstarch) this helps to slow done the reaction of the bath bomb so you can enjoy it for longer in your bath tub and Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA), this is a powdered surfactant which helps to cleanse your skin, a very small amount is used to help boost the bubbles in the fizz and it also helps to slow down the reaction of the bath bomb too.

The next ingredients are the liquid ingredients which are: Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil (sweet almond oil) which is a carrier oil which has moisturising properties to help moisturise your skin, Parfum (fragrance oil) in my bath bombs I do usually use fragrance oil but some of my bath bombs use essential oils which all have their own scientific name and their own properties, I shall address these in separate blog posts, the fragrance oils just provide my bath bombs with a wonderful aroma. I then put in a synthetic ingredient called Polysorbate 80, this helps to bind all of the ingredients together and stops any oils from settling on top of the bath water leaving a greasy layer, it helps to disperse the oils into the water so it moisturises your skin without feeling greasy. The Polysorbate 80 also helps to stop the colourant in the bath tubs from staining the bath tub! Aqua (water) is used to help bind the bath bomb all together and it helps the bath bomb to become rock hard when it dries. Finally the last ingredient is colourants. Each bath bombs have different colours and are identified using CI (colour index) and then a number which corresponds to each specific colour. The colourants that I use in my bath bombs are water soluble dyes and can be used in their powder form or activated with water to become a liquid dye that is added to colour the bath bomb.

All ingredients used in my bath bombs are supplied by small businesses and are of the highest quality. Each bath bomb batch is completely handmade by myself using my own Bath bomb recipe which I have adapted and had assessed to legally sell these bath bombs in the UK.
